Sorry about the mess.

OK, I’ve finally got my blog back up and running, as should be obvious by now. I had originally intended to move it to a new, faster server, plus upgrade to the new MT version at the same time, but when I got stuff set up there, I realized that the new server only allows one database. Supposedly for technical reasons. One! So, I’m not going to be using that server for this domain after all. Unfortunately, I happened to go on vacation for a week in the middle of everything, which was probably not a good idea. Well, the going on vacation was a good idea, it’s the not-completing-a-project-before-vacation thing that was a bad idea. Anyway, now I’ve got a brand spankin’ new installation of the latest version of MT here. The pretty style isn’t uploaded yet, but at least the content is. Welcome back.

Working on the style again…

I’ve gotten the monthly archive looking decent now. I think all I have left is the comments…what a pain in the ass. I may or may not get the comments looking decent tonight.

The style continues to weird out sometimes in IE, although it always looks fine in Forefox. I think I’ll leave it as it is. I’m tired of messing with it. It’s always at least readable.

Update: I’ve got the comment templates working, so everything should be pretty now. If something isn’t pretty, let me know!

Design

It seems to have stopped working agagin. My apologies if you’re having trouble viewing the page–I’ll do something about it as soon as I’m motivated to start fighting with the code again. It’s such a simple concept, unbelievable that it’s so difficult to get working right.

The Alchera Project

The Alchera Project

I found out about The Alchera Project from my friend Joy, who’s been writing from their prompts for a while now. I have to admit that having a blog hasn’t helped me with writing my thesis (so far!), but I am enjoying the writing itself. In school I was always considered a good writer, but writing’s never been something I’ve enjoyed. So, this is an interesting new development for me. The Alchera Project is really nothing more than a less-tacky-than-average blog meme, but a lot of the topics they give are interesting to think about (for me, at least). We’ll see how it goes.

New Style

I’m working on a new style for the blog…again. Things may be kinda weird for a little while. IE is especially strange today…when I view the page online, it looks totally weird, but if I choose “View Source” and then view that HTML in IE, it looks fine. *shakes head*

Update: There are few things in life I hate more than trying to get a style to work in all browsers. It looks just beautiful in FireFox, Netscape, and IE–when IE is embedded in my text editor! In IE by itself it scoots over to have the left in the middle of the screen. This is simply ridiculous.

2nd Update: Now it works in standalone IE, ForeFox, and Netscape, but not in the IE embedded in my text editor. How does it look on your screen? If it looks seriously weird, please send me a screenshot and some info about your setup. I’m only talking about the main page here–I’m not even attempting to fix the individual entry pages or comments pages yet.

3rd Update: Got the Individual Entry Archive page working–still haven’t touched the comments popups. So many bits of weirdness in this style, given the Javascript layout, I guess. Man, I hate web design. The 10% of the time spent working on creating and implementing the design is great–it’s just the other 90% of the time trying to get things working the same in the different browsers that sucks. Is it this way for everyone, or am I just particularly imept, or what?

Well, Scratch That.

Dad didn’t like the black background with white text. Well, I agree with him, actually. I wasn’t very fond of the design I’d come up with, so I’m going back to the drawing board.

Partial Success.

Well, it seems as if the blog thing is working to get me to write more. I can hardly shut up! We’ll see if it lasts.

There are still some CSS bugs and some pages I haven’t even touched yet, but overall I’ve gotten a lot of work done on the site tonight. I’m not really wild about the design, but hey, I’m not a designer, after all! I’ve got to quit for today and go to bed.

Arrgh!

OK, so it looks like crap in my newsreader. Lots more work left to be done. Everything is readable and functional right now though, so far as I can tell. I’m going to take a break for a while.

Comments Fixed.

My friend Joy pointed out to me that the comments weren’t working. Turned out that when Johannes installed a security-code checker to thwart comment spam, that affected all the blogs on this server. Nice. Anyway, the problem is fixed now. The only problem is that yes, now you have to enter a security code to post a comment. Sorry about the trouble.
